Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The University of Kentucky was chartered in February of 1865 by the Kentucky Legislature, as the "Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky," a department established, pursuant to the terms of the Morrill Land-Grant Act of 1862, for the purpose of college-level training in Agriculture and Engineering, within Kentucky University, a private, sectarian institution organized at the same time. Ensuing denominational and theological controversies, as well as financial difficulties, prompted the Legislature to formally separate the College from the University in 1878, and the former, in 1880, began a century-and-a-quarter of development as an independent institution of higher education on the site of a municipal park and fairgrounds donated by the city of Lexington. In 1908 the A&M College attained University status, and in 1916 it assumed its present name.
- Ezra L. Gillis founded the Bureau of Source Materials in Higher Education within the University of Kentucky Office of the President in 1937 upon his retirement from his position as Registrar (1910-1937). The Bureau became the University and Educational Archives in 1956 and University Archives in 1965, when it was moved into the Library and merged with Special Collections.
- Scope and Content
- The University of Kentucky Bureau of Source Materials in Education Ledger Collection (dated 1868-1965, undated; 42 cubic feet, 295 volumes) primarily comprises volumes that document academic (matriculation, class and grade record books) and financial materials of the A&M College, State College, and University of Kentucky. Included in the academic ledgers (1868-1960) are matriculation registers (1869-1912, nonconsecutive and some ledgers overlap; first women students in 1880) and many grade (1882-1918) and class (1891-1960) record books from various departments and specific professors. There are also many financial ledgers (1888-1965), which comprise records/reports from the Office of the Controller and Treasurer (1894-1965), the Agriculture Experiment Station (1888-1919), and various university account books, expenses, receipts, and payroll records. The collection also includes volumes that relate to clubs and organizations from the university (1883-1923, Patterson Literary Society and others), from the Louisville College of Pharmacy (1871-1900), and from other organizations. Some volumes also consist of various materials from students and faculty members (1890-1933), including records of x-rays made by Merry L. Pence (1900-1916), petitions for retention of W.E. Rowe as Dean of Civil Engineering (1916), and materials from the trial of Richard S. Webb, Junior in the case of the burning of Professor F. Paul Anderson's office (1912). There are also administrative records (1897-1932) that relate to departmental and Board of Education reports, applications for positions from the Registrar's Office (1900-1931), and personal data about the Board of Trustees(1920-1931). An index by subject, name, and/or title is also included. Nine of the volumes have been added to other accessions, but are listed in the Index. Twenty-three volumes are missing, and this is noted in each volume title.
