Collection Overview

Biography / History
William James Marshall "Bill" was born in Toronto, Canada on January 5, 1944. Marshall emigrated to northeastern Ohio with his parents, Ruth Collver Marshall and William James Marshall in 1947. Bill graduated from Heidelberg College in 1966 with a B.A. in American history. While in school Marshall was involved in the Civil Rights movement, participating in the March on Washington on August 28, 1963 and attending Alabama's Talladega College as an exchange student in 1964. In 1968 Bill entered the U.S. Army and served in Germany where he supervised Special Courts-Martial and at U.S Army HQ, Long Binh, Vietnam where he handled valor awards including the Medal of Honor. Returning stateside, in 1973 Marshall earned masters degrees in Library Science and American History from Kent State University. The same year he was hired by the University of Kentucky Libraries. In 1976 he became the Director of Special Collections and Archives—a division of the library which included the Appalachian and Kentuckiana Collections, rare books and manuscripts, modern political papers, the oral history program, photographs and audio-visual archives, King Library Press, and University Archives and Records. It was a post that Marshall held until 2004. Bill was also a teacher-- between 1976-2008 he annually taught a graduate course on Archives and Manuscripts Management in the UK Library School. In addition, Marshall was professionally active. He was one of the founding members of the Kentucky Council on Archives. A member of the Society of American Archivists, he served as the oral history section chair and for several years team-taught a pre-conference workshop on oral history at SAA's annual meeting. An avid baseball fan and scholar, Marshall is a member of the Society of American Baseball Research (SABR). In 1999 the University Press of Kentucky published his book Baseball's Pivotal Era, 1945-1951. The work received national attention and earned SABR's 2000 Seymour Award for baseball history. Bill was active in community service on boards and advisory committees. Most notable were his stints as chair of the Kentucky Bach Choir and as Secretary of the Kentucky Civil War Roundtable. In addition, Marshall is an active member of Lexington's First Presbyterian Church (PCUSA), where he served as a Deacon and Elder and sang in the Chancel and Chamber choirs. Moreover, he served the church for several years as chair of the Kentucky Campus Ministry Board and as a board member of the Presbyterian Historical Society in Philadelphia.
Scope and Content
The Bill Marshall papers (dated 1962-2012, undated; 10.47 cubic feet; 13 boxes) primarily comprise the correspondence, newspaper clippings, research, education materials, and Presbyterian Church papers gathered and created by William Marshall during the course of his career as an archivist and historian. The correspondence is primarily between Bill Marshall and his wife Jan, and Bill's colleagues and co-workers. The letters document Bill's work, research, and time in the U.S. Army. Also included are Bill's photocopies of Lexington Leader newspaper baseball columns used as research for his book Baseball's Pivotal Era, 1945-1951. You may come across language in UK Libraries Special Collections Research Center collections and online resources that you find harmful or offensive. SCRC collects materials from different cultures and time periods to preserve and make available the historical record. These materials document the time period when they were created and the view of their creator. As a result, some may demonstrate racist and offensive views that do not reflect the values of UK Libraries.

If you find description with problematic language that you think SCRC should review, please contact us at SCRC@uky.edu.
