The Kirwan-Blanding Dormitory Complex on the University of Kentucky campus was dedicated on October 26, 1968, and occupied from 1966 through spring 2014. It was designed by architect Edward Durell Stone and named for key UK administrators Albert D. Kirwan and Sarah Gibson Blanding. It was demolished in spring and summer 2020.
Scope and Content
The Sarah Gibson Blanding Blanding Tower (University of Kentucky) Residence Council scrapbooks and meeting minutes (dated 1968-1984; 2.87 cubic feet; 1 record storage carton and 4 flat boxes) primarily comprises 14 scrapbooks and a set of meeting minutes compiled by the University of Kentucky Sarah Gibson Blanding Tower House Council from 1968 to 1984. Blanding Tower was a woman's residence hall/dormitory during this time. The scrapbooks include photographs of residents and Tower events and newspaper clippings about the residents, the Tower, and events held at the Tower. The meeting minutes date from October 1, 1979, to March 31, 1980. Minutes include an invitation to "An Old Fashioned Christmas" event and a memorandum dated December 3, 1979, from Tom Padgett, Director of Public Safety, regarding a report on a Blanding Tower elevator incident on November 30, 1979. There are missing scrapbooks from 1981-1982 and 1982-1983.
