Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Chauncey Hawley Griffith was born in 1879 in Ironton, Ohio. He began his career as a journeyman compositor and pressman. Griffith joined the Mergenthaler Linotype Company in 1906 in the sales staff. In 1922 he became the vice-president of the development department, and revolutionized the technology into what would become known as today's 'font'. In 1936 Griffith became the vice-president of the company developing fonts until his death in 1956 in Butler, New York.
- Scope and Content
- The Chauncey Hawley Griffith photograph collection consists of 15 gelatin silver prints. Seven portraits of Chauncey Hawley Griffith, vice-president in charge of typographical development for the Mergenthaler Linotype Company, and 8 of his house and property. Separated from the manuscript collection 72M31.
