Collection Overview

Biography / History
Chauncey Hawley Griffith was born in 1879 in Ironton, Ohio. He began his career as a journeyman compositor and pressman. Griffith joined the Mergenthaler Linotype Company in 1906 in the sales staff. In 1922 he became the vice-president of the development department, and revolutionized the technology into what would become known as today's 'font'. In 1936 Griffith became the vice-president of the company developing fonts until his death in 1956 in Butler, New York.
Scope and Content
The Chauncey Hawley Griffith photograph collection consists of 15 gelatin silver prints. Seven portraits of Chauncey Hawley Griffith, vice-president in charge of typographical development for the Mergenthaler Linotype Company, and 8 of his house and property. Separated from the manuscript collection 72M31.
