Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Kentucky politician and former representative Brent Yonts was born in Greensville, KY on March 21, 1949. After earning his BS at Murray State University in 1971, Yonts served as First Lieutenant in the United States Army Adjutant General's Corps from 1971-1973. Then Yonts earned his JD from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1975. The following year, Yonts returned to his hometown of Greensville to establish Brent Yonts Law Office.
- Yonts began his political career in 1994, running for the District 15 1994 Democratic Primary. However, he lost to Charles Nelson, who went on to win in the general election. When Nelson left the Legislature in 1996, Yonts successfully won the seat and remained unopposed until the 2008 where he defeated Republican nominee Matthew Oates. Yonts continued to serve as the District 15 legislator until Republican nominee Melinda Gibbons Prunty defeated him in 2016.
- Currently, Yonts practices law at Yonts, Sherman and Driskill, PSC. Yonts married Jan F. Covington in 1976. They had three children: Emily Yonts Sparks, Ellen Yonts Sueholtz, and Harrison Yonts.
- Scope and Content
- The Brent Yonts papers (dated 1981-2016, undated; 74 cubic feet; 71 boxes, 7 flat boxes; 429 MB, 480 digital files) consist of correspondence, greenslips, citations, office files, newspaper clippings, issue files, session bills, assembly documents, and memorabilia, which document Yonts' 20 years of service in the Kentucky General Assembly representing the 15th district. Correspondence, greenslips, session bills, and assembly and issue files document Yonts' activities in the Kentucky House of Representatives between 1997 and 2016. Major issues in Yonts' career include food quality in Kentucky's prison systems, public worker pension plans, altering beginning/ending dates of the school year, and the decline in coal employment. These papers document the concerns of Yonts' Western Kentucky constituents about such issues as well as resulting legislation. The collection also contains printed copies of Yonts' regular news column, Legislator Logs, and legislative memorabilia such as nametags, buttons, and t-shirts. The papers have been minimally processed at the box level.
