- John Cicle Davis was an African-American soldier from Louisville, Kentucky. He served as Corporal in the 2284th Quartermaster Trucking Company in the Pacific theater during World War II.
- Scope and Content
- The John C. Davis notebook and photograph album (dated 1944; 0.1 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprises a notebook that documents the United States military's campaign on the island of Okinawa, Japan, in 1944 as told from the perspective of Corporal John C. Davis, an African-American soldier from Louisville, Kentucky, who served in the army in the 2284th quartermaster truck company. It contains newspaper and magazine clippings, twenty-three photographs that illustrate camaraderie among fellow soldiers and the realities of war facing the civilians of Japan, seven pages of written goodbyes from twenty-five soldiers in his company, and a graphic four-page desciption about hand-to-hand combat during a mission to destroy a fuel dump located in Suicide Bay. This notebook contains harmful language and graphic depictions of violence.
