- Biography / History
- Marie Campbell was born in 1907. She was a teacher and folklorist. Between 1926 and 1934 Campbell lived, worked, and travelled the eastern Kentucky Mountains. She is also the author of Folks Do Get Born.
- Scope and Content
- The Marie Campbell manuscript includes the original and author's carbon copy of her anthology of Kentucky folklore. The manuscript includes seventy-eight stories collected by Campbell in the 1920s and 1930s while she lived and worked in eastern Kentucky. Many of the stories are based on European traditions from German fairy tales to Irish hero stories to Greek myths. The stories were a part of the oral tradition of Kentucky which Campbell aimed to preserve in the book. It was published in 1958 by Indiana University Press.
