Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Camp Shelby, located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, was established in 1917. The first troops to train here, the 38th Division, named the post in honor of Isaac Shelby, a Revolutionary War hero and the first governor of Kentucky. It was established in support of the mobilization effort during World War I and served as a training site for reserve components of the Army. Today, along with being a training site for Army reserves, it also serves as a training site for active components of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force. It is the largest state-owned and operated field training center in the United States, covering more than 134,000 acres.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Camp Shelby illustrated review scrapbook (dated circa 1917-1918; 0.025 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprises one printed scrapbook that documents the men who trained at and operated Camp Shelby during World War I. The scrapbook includes photographs of the post commanders, the companies stationed at the camp, and support staff. Towards the back of the scrapbook are photographs and comical drawings of daily life in the camp, and records of games played by the soldiers. There is a section in the back for the owner of the review to fill out with identifying information however, it is blank.
- The Camp Shelby illustrated review scrapbook collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
