Collection Overview

Biography / History
Waveland is considered one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in Kentucky. Joseph Bryan constructed Waveland home in 1845 for his wife, Margaret Cartmell and their five children, on a 2,000-acre tract of land he inherited from his father, Daniel Boone Bryan (nephew and namesake of Daniel Boone, the original owner and surveyor the land). The Commonwealth of Kentucky purchased the property in 1956 for use as an experimental farm and the following year, Waveland was designated the Kentucky Life Museum. Waveland is now a state historic site and a living house museum located at 225 Waveland Museum Lane off of US 27 (Nicholasville Road) in rural Fayette County.
Scope and Content
The Waveland State Shrine Photographic Collection, 1861-1865 consists of 36 images of Civil War soldiers and dignitaries. The first 20 are albumen carte de visite portraits of Civil War figures (most of them generals); there are also four tintypes, an ambrotype, an albumen portrait in a locket, a pasteboard with ten albumen cartes de visite glued to it, and a halftone printed on a varnished brass plate.
