Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Fulkerson family of McLean County, Kentucky included Charles T. Fulkerson (1865-1923), his wife Mary Isabelle Dant (1861-1932) whom he married in 1889, and their eight children: Mary Blanche (1889-1969), Joseph Alphonsus (1892-1985), William McCarty (1894-1981), John Sylvester (1896-1992), Charles Anthony (1897-1981), Joseph Dolan (1899-1957), Francis Raymond (1902-1982), and Margaret Matilda (1904-1931). Fulkerson owned and operated his own farm. Mary Blanche married Elmer Jewell (1902-1966) and they had three children. Joseph Alphonsus never married. William McCarty married Mary Jo Frazier (1909-1978) in 1926, and they had two children. John Sylvester married Helen Corine Sutton (1911-1967), and they had five children. Charles Anthony married Ethel Clouse (1913-1944), and they had two children. Joseph Dolan married Mary Agnes Wagner (1900-1988) and they had one child. Francis married and had two children, and Margaret never married.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Fulkerson family letters (dated 1926-1934, 1955; 0.02 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprise letters between Fulkerson family members documenting the daily life and connection between the members as they spread out across Kentucky in the early-to-mid twentieth century. The letters discuss farming practices, finding employment for siblings, financial support, attending school, and the health of Margaret while she is hospitalized.
The Fulkerson family letters are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
