Collection Overview

Biography / History
Lieutenant Hiram Moe Greene was an officer and physician in the U.S. Navy during World War II, from Fremont, Ohio. Lt. Greene was assigned to the USS Wahoo, a United States Navy submarine which sank in the Sea of Japan on October 11, 1943. Jessie Robinson Moore, R.N. was a nurse at City Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky during World War II. Lt. Greene and Jessie Robinson Moore were romantically involved, and Lt. Greene sent a number of letters between February of 1942 and March of 1943. Barbara P. Walters, PhD, is the niece of Jessie Robinson Moore.
Scope and Content
The Hiram Moe Green letters to Jessie Robinson (dated 1941-2018, bulk 1942-1943; 0.03 cubic feet; 1 folder), consists of letters from Hiram Moe Greene to Jessie Robinson during World War II. Additionally, the collection includes research material assembled by Barbara P. Walters, the niece of Jessie Robinson (Moore), including a newspaper clipping, essay, and other genealogical information. The materials describe the sinking of the USS Wahoo, a U.S. Navy submarine to which Lt. Greene was assigned. The letters, which span from February of 1942 until March of 1943, discuss the relationship between Greene and Moore prior to Greene's assignment on the Wahoo. The essay discusses the letters and the relationship between Greene and Moore.
