Fertilizer Cont rol of the Exne erime11 Stoti on, died at his home in Lering~
ton on the morning of May 4, 1940, age 53 years. He was a tireless
painsgaking and efficient worker end his long experience in all Dhases Of
tote and Federal control offi~

cial. In his untimely death our institution lost a loyal and efficient
worker and his associates an agreeable co-worker and a staunch and valued
friend.

Mr. Spears wa s born in Lexington, Kentucky, March 5, 1887, son of
John Esten and Kate Warfield Spears. He reoe ived his B. S. degree from
the State College of Kentucky in 1907 and his M. S. in 1908 and did post'
graduate work here in 1911 and in 1927~?8. He entered the Exoeriment
Station as student assistant chemist in the Food Laboratory in 1906 and
of the Deoartment of Feed COntrol in the following year, where he con~
tinued as chemist until the union of the Feed and Fertilizer Control
Departments in 1939 when he beCame Senior Chemist of the consolidated
departments.
