WILDCATS CARVE INCREDIBLE POST-SEASON TOURNAMENT RECORD
Since Kentucky made its first appearance in a major post season basketball tournament in 1942, no graduating class has ever missed the opportunity to play in either the NCAA or National Invitational Tournaments.
In fact, the Wildcats have an incredible record which lias seen them miss only seven times (1943, '53, '54, '60, '63, '65, '67 and '74) in the past 32 years. Two of those misses were in 1953, when they sat out a season, and '54, when the undefeated National Champions won an automatic NCAA berth but declined the bid.
23 TODAY'S GAME
By JACK PERRY Assistant Sports Information Director
Kentucky and Vanderbilt renew one of the South's finest basketball rivalries today in Lexington before a national television audience on the NBC network. Tip-off is 4:00 p.m., EST at Memorial Coliseum.
While neither team's overall record is impressiveKentucky is 6-6 and Vandy 7-6the drama and nail-biting tension of the confrontation is certain to permeate an expected overflow crowd.
Consider the Commodores are tied for the Southeastern Conference lead with a 3-1 ledger while the proud Wildcats are struggling to stay alive in the race with a 1-3 mark.
Both teams have momentumVandy coming off a fine 77-66 win over arch-rival Tennessee and the Wildcats, beset with inexperience and the loss of injured 6-foot-10 Rick Robey, earning their first conference win with a 92-76 effort over a solid Georgia team Monday. That same Georgia team took Vanderbilt into overtime two days earlier at Nashville before losing 95-85.
It will be a battle of age versus youthVandy starts three seniors while Kentucky likely will start three sophomores and one senior non-letterman.
Leading Vandy are seniors Jeff Fosnes, 17.8, Butch Feher, 17.3, and Joe Ford, 15.7, and sophomores Dick Keffer, 7.0 and John Sneed, 9.1. Feher and Sneed lead in rebounding with 8.3 and 7.2 respectively. The Commodores are hitting 48.5 percent from the field and are averaging 78.0 ppg to opponents' 78.4.
Expected to start for the Wildcats are guards Larry Johnson, 9.2, and Reggie Warford, 3.6, forwards Jack Givens, 19.0, and James Lee, 5.5, and center Mike Phillips, 1 1.3. Leading rebounders are Phillips, 6.9, Givens, 6.3, and Lee, 5.8.
Kentucky leads Vandy 72-26 in a series dating back to 1912.
The UK Jaycees play a preliminary against UK Dental School at 1 :00 p.m.

Short Shots:
A thin Kentucky squad was cut to the critical stage when Dan Hall, a 6-10 sophomore center from Betsy Layne, Ky., announced Monday that he was withdrawing from school. Hall, who was married Dec. 23, enrolled at Marshall University early this week. He had started three games for the Cats this season and had scored eight points in nine games. Hall's exodus leaves the Cats with only 10 players, plus Rick Robey, who is recuperating from injury.

Rick Robey, who suffered a moderate sprain of the right knee socket against Alabama a week ago, was released from the hospital Tuesday where he had been undergoing four hours therapy daily to strengthen his knee. He will continue therapy daily Monday, Robey fully extended his leg for the first time since his injuryHe is now lifting 30 lbs., a good sign say therapists.

Senior guard Reggie Warford, the "old man" of the team,
started his third consecutive game against Georgia and came
through with a career high 12 points plus playing a nifty floor
game. The quick southpaw from Drakesboro has logged 133 minutes in 10 games compared to only 22 minutes during his first two years. Warford has improved his control of the ball, too, committing only nine turnovers during that span.
Mike Phillips, a 6-10, 235 lb. sophomore center from Akron, Ohio, was highly recruited by Tennessee as he was breaking records at Manchester High School. Last Saturday, he went to war against the Vols, scoring 26 points and grabbing 28 rebounds in the 90-88 overtime loss. The 28. rebounds is a UK single high since Dan Issel pulled down 29 against LSU in 1969. The UK record, 34, was set by Bob Burrow against Temple in 1955.
Mike Phillips, shown above against Washington State in the UKIT, grabbed 28 rebounds against Tennessee a week ago to record the fourth best single game effort at UK.

MY OLD KENTUCKY HOME
The sun shines bright in the old Kentucky home, 'Tis summer, the people are gay; The corn-top's ripe and the meadow's in the bloom While the birds make music all the day.
The young folks roll on the little cabin floor All merry, all happy and bright; By'n by hard times comes a-knocking at the door Then my old Kentucky home., Good-night!
Weep no more my lady, Oh! weep no more today! We will sing one song for the old Kentucky home For the old Kentucky home, far away.

ATHLETICS AT KENTUCKY
Kentucky's atliletic program, a well-balanced and ambitious activity featuring intercollegiate competition in ten different sports, is organized under the Department of Athletics and a corporation known as the University of Kentucky Athletics Association.
The program is conducted without overemphasis or sacrifice of educational objectives and in strict compliance with the rules of the University, the Southeastern Conference and the National Collegiate Athletics Association.

29 WILDCATS FEATURED TWICE ON NATIONAL TELEVISION AND ONCE ON SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE SERIES
The Southeastern Conference Television Series enters its 12th year and the Kentucky Wildcats will keep intact their record of having appeared at least three times each year, making it the only SEC team to claim that magnetic attraction for its brand of basketball.
In fact, two of their games will be featured nationally and both will be in Lexington-Jan. 17 against Vanderbilt, and Mar. 6 against Alabama. The other SEC series game will be Feb. 7 at Tennessee.
Three teams-Alabama, Auburn and Tennessee are scheduled three times also, while Georgia and Vanderbilt will appear twice. Florida, LSU, Ole Miss and Mississippi State will appear only once.
The 10-weck series over a regional network again will be produced by TVS Television of New York. All games will be played on Saturday afternoons. Auburn opens the series at Louisiana State Jan. 3.
Kentucky has won 25- and lost only 14, for a 65 per cent win average during the eleven year series. The year-by-ycar breakdown: Won one of three games in '64-65, three of four in '65-66, two of four in both '66-67 and '67-68, three of five in '68-69, all four in '69-70, three of four in '70-71, two of three in both '71-72 and '72-73, one of three in '73-74, and all three in '74-75.

3 Vanderbilt
University
Chancellor Heard
Vanderbilt University began a two-and-a-half year celebration of its centennial in March of 1973 with the 100th anniversary of the founding and a reunion on campus of the Vanderbilt family that has helped to support it for six generations. Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt founded the university in 1873 with a handsome gift of one million dollars, for the purpose of "strengthening the ties which should exist between all geographical sections of our common country . . ." It was to be the great university of the central South, which was just beginning to recover from the Civil War.
Since 1973 the university has also celebrated the graduation of its first medical class, the rededication of the laying of the cornerstone of Kirkland Hall, and will conclude the observance with a ceremony commemorating the centennial of the opening of classes on October 3-4, 1975.
Other centennial events have included lectures delivered by such internationally known figures as Willy Brandt, former Chancellor of the German Federal Republic, and Sir John Hicks, Nobel Laureate in Economics. Several meetings of important academic organizations have been held on campus as part of the observance. These include the Association of American Universities, the triennial convention of the United Chapters of Phi Beta Kappa and the Council of Southern Universities.
From the beginning Vanderbilt met the two definitions of a university: it offered work in the liberal arts and sciences beyond the baccalaureate degree, and it included several professional schools in addition to its college. Presently, Vanderbilt has eight schools: the College of Arts and Science, the School of Engineering, the School of Nursing, the School of Medicine, the Graduate School, the School of Law,
the Divinity School and its newest (1968), the Graduate School of Management. The university offers the Ph.D. degree in 33 fields of study.
Among the most significant accomplishments of Vanderbilt has been its achievement in recent years of the highest percentage of participation in alumni giving of any university in the country. Chancellor Alexander Heard regards this loyalty as a basic key to the preservation of private learning institutions.
Commodore Vanderbilt's gift in 1873 got Vanderbilt off to a magnificent start in the early years. Today the university's endowment is more than $150 million.
The campus has expanded to twice its original size. Enrollment when classes began in 1875 was 307 and in the fall of 1974 it was 6,923.
The first Vanderbilt catalog listed a faculty of 26. Today's faculty of 1,540 has included such distinguished members as the late Dr. Earl Sutherland, winner of the 1971 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discovery of a chemical regulator in the body that affects growth and behavior. Dr. Sutherland was the first professor at a Southern university to win a Nobel prize for scientific research.
Other notable faculty members pioneered in the use of photography as a tool of astronomy, bounced the first radar wave off the moon, laid the foundations of modern virus research and observed the world's first photo-produced atomic hyperon particle.
One of Vanderbilt's great strengths is its medical school. In the famous survey of American medical education published by the Carnegie Foundation in 1910, Abraham Flexner suggested that Vanderbilt was the best qualified institution to improve the quality of medical education in its area in the country. Carnegie and Rockefeller grants subsequently established the Vanderbilt Medical Center, which today has more than 7500 applicants for 83 places in the first year class of the School of Medicine.
