- Biography / History
- The Hampton Roads Port of Embarkation was opened in 1942 as a part of the Army command structure and port infrastructure for sending supplies and personnel overseas during World War II. It was the third largest U.S. Army Transportation Corp port of embarkation and handled the sending of troops to North Africa and Italy. During World War I it was activated as Newport News Port of Embarkation. Additionally, the port maintained a historians office. "United States Army Signal Corps, Hampton Roads, Virginia. - Scope and Content
- The Port Surgeon's Division, Hampton Roads Port of Embarkation photographs (dated 1942-1946; 0.75 cubic feet; 3 boxes) consists of a historical report concerning the Hampton Roads Port of Embarkation during World War II and photographs used to illustrate the report. The report contains descriptions about the geography and layout of the port as well as the responsibilities of the port surgeon during World War II. Statistics are included relating to the number of people passing through the port for each year; the number of tons of medical supplies transported; and tons of meat and dairy products inspected. The two boxes of photos were included to illustrate the report and generally depict the port and activities occurring there, including photos of casualties and prisoners of war.
