Collection Overview

Biography / History
Gateway Foundation is a Chicago-based non-profit rehabilitation center that offers a range of substance abuse treatment programs for teenagers and adults. Gateway began in 1964 when, under the direction of the chaplain of the Chicago House of Corrections, a group of concerned citizens came together to form the Council for the Understanding and Rehabilitation of Addicts (CURA). In 1968, CURA became the Gateway Houses Foundation and opened its first building in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood.
Gateway administers myriad treatment programs that focus on helping clients to lead productive, drug-free lives. The foundation's services include residential and outpatient rehabilitation, youth care, referrals, DUI evaluations, and aftercare programs that enable clients to achieve their personal goals through community-based prevention therapies during and after substance abuse treatment. Gateway also provides treatment services to incarcerated persons through the Gateway Corrections program, which began as a pilot program in 1980 in Chicago's Cook County Jail.
In 1983, Gateway Houses Foundation became Gateway Foundation in order to reflect its diverse treatment programs. Today, Gateway Foundation has facilities in Illinois, St. Louis, Delaware, Missouri, New Jersey, and Texas.
