- Biography / History
- Burt (1907-1988) and Mildred Blackwell (1906-1970) lived in Louisville, Kentucky. Burt worked for WAVE radio, starting out as an announcer when the station opened in 1933. By 1964, he was the chief television director. No other biographical information available.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Burt and Mildred Blackwell travel diary (dated 1934-1967; 0.15 cubic feet; 1 box) comprises one diary that documents the trips and vacations taken by the Blackwell couple across North and South America, and Europe in the early-to-mid twentieth century. Locations visited in the Americas include Florida, Georgia, New York, Wisconsin, Colorado, "The West", Illinois, Canada, the Caribbean, Jamaica, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Panama. The two-month Europe trip covered Italy, Monaco, Switzerland, Germany, Holland, England, and France. The entries were written by Mildred. She described each day of their trips, including the weather, friends run in to and made, activities, shopping, and where and what they ate. In many of the entries, she added in her opinions of the cities and countries visited, their lodging, the locals and staff, and her excitement to be in each place during the trip. The couple used planes, trains, cars, and ships to reach their destinations, however a majority of the travel was done by car or train. Included in the front of the diary is a photograph of Burt.
- The Burt and Mildred Blackwell travel diary is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
