FOREWORD

This directory provides the same listing of state offiicals and state,
county, and local school administrative and supervisory personnel as
in previous directories with these additions: (l) a list of assistant super-
intendents, finance officers, visiting teachers, and school lunch direc-
tors in county and independent school districts, (2) a telephone
directory for state department of education personnel and street ad-
dress for local schools when available.

These changes have been made in the directory:

1. Revised listing of schools to include all secondary and com-
bined schools and separate elementary schools of eight or more
teachers under the direction of a principal instead of the previous
listing starting with four or more teacher schools. With the new ac-
creditation program for elementary schools of eight or more teachers
it is now possible to accord these schools the same status and recog-
nition as secondary schools in the state. The regrouping of schools
will permit a separate study and report on all schools of less than
eight teachers.

2. The statistical data on enrollment has been omitted from this
Directory and will be made available in other state bulletins devoted
to Kentucky secondary and elementary schools. This change has been
made to reduce the duplication of reporting by the school districts.
The official enrollment reports due on October 15 are not received
in time to be included in this bulletin. To partly compensate for this
change, other descriptive data on hand for the 1960-61 school year
have been included; for example, the superintendent’s request for basic
classroom teachers under the Foundation Program and school organi-
zation pattern are provided in Part III of local data. The number of
basic teachers does not include special and vocational teachers. This
information is meant to be descriptive only. It is hoped that it will
help the user who is interested in approximate school size and grades
served by the school.

3. The alphabetical listing of schools in Parts I and II provide
a reference only to Part III of local data for persons who may not
know the county in which a school is located. Information about each
school has been consolidated in this list beginning on page 449.

The Department of Education expresses appreciation to the su-
perintendents for their assistance in providing the list of schools and

personnel. This edition of the Directory has been prepared by the
Research Division.

James L. Patton
Assistant Superintendent of Instruction
