- Biography / History
- Richard and Margaret Foley, both born in Virginia, were one of thirty families who settled at Bowman's Station fort, near Harrodsburg, Kentucky in 1779. Richard purchased an one-hundredth acre farm near Lexington in 1789. He built a mill at South Elkhorn creek to manufacture gunpowder, the first person to do so in region. Richard and Margaret's ten children continued to farm and start businesses in Jessamine, Mercer, and Fayette Counties throughout the nineteenth century. Some Foley family members served the Union during the United States' Civil War, including Richard Jordan Foley who died days after the end of war in an explosion on the Sultana Steamship carrying returning troops. Most of the family remained in Kentucky, although the children of Elijah Foley (1771-1843), son of Richard, moved westward to Clay County, Missouri in the 1850s. Other prominent members of the family include James Spencer McHargue, Head of University of Kentucky Chemistry Department, Agricultural Experiment Station (1934-48) and Ernest Foley (1910-1988), a Second World War veteran.

- Scope and Content
- The Foley family genealogy collection (dated 1829-2015; 6 cubic feet; 6 boxes) primarily consists of 23 binders of family genealogical research documentation for the Foley family of Kentucky and Missouri. The binders are an extensive tracing of the family descended from Richard and Margaret Foley, who settled in Mercer County, Kentucky at Bowman's Station in 1779. The binders were compiled by Nancy Foley Johnson, a Richard Foley descendant, between 1971-2015. Among the sources used for obtaining information were census, tax lists, family Bibles, deed books, newspapers and published materials. Also included in the collection are some original deeds, letters, court records, photographs, books, and ephemera dated 1829-2009.
