RAPPER AND ACTOR ICE-T SPEAKS 0N CONTROVERSY, ACTING AND NEW MUSIC

By Matt Coins
CONTRIBUTING WRITER

One of the founding fa-
thers of gangsta rap came to
Lexington last week at the
newly opened Starlight Mu-
sic Club in Woodhill.

Ice-T and his band,
Body Count, performed for
two hours before a crowd of
300 on July 23.

"A lot of people don‘t
even believe we're here.
They‘re like, ‘That ain't the
real Ice—T.’ We had a great
show last night," he said of
the Lexington appearance.

Ice-T, whose given name
is Tracy Marrow, blamed
the low attendance on poor
promotion. but hardcore
fans didn't mind.

"We drove from Atlanta.
Who would have thought
we'd be two feet from Ice-T?"
said Tim Scott of Atlanta.

Ice-T, 45, has proven he
is more than your typical
rapper — choosing to express
himself through acting,
speaking and music — dur-
ing a career that has

spanned more than two
decades.

Ice»T emerged on the
national music scene in 1983
with the release of his sin-
gles "Cold Winter Madness"
and "Body Rock/Killers,"
which are considered the be-
ginnings of gangster rap
and hip-hop on the West
Coast.

He gained national at-
tention in 1992 with the re-
lease of the widely criti-
cized "Cop Killer."

Ice-T said the controver-
sial release was a protest
record made when tensions
were high in Los Angeles
following the assault on
Rodney King by LA. police
officers.

"The record was aimed
at police brutality, not just
all police." He said the in-
tended message of the song
was. "You (screwed) up, and
you‘re not fooling anyone."

Since then, the Newark.
NJ. native has parlayed the

Don Pratt gained the support of UK students when he
challenged Dick DeCamp for the District 3 city council seat
last year A former UK student and longtime civic activist,
Pratt spoke to student groups during his campaign, en-
couraging them to become more involved in local govern-
ment and decision-making.

Pratt's loss in the election did nothing to quell his po-
litical passions or his determination as an advocate of
everything from bottle and newspaper recycling bills to
hemp and marijuana legalization.

Pratt recently sat down with the Kernel to share his
thoughts on recent issues afi’ecting UK and what students
should be doing to be heard.

P1Qt’What is your opinion of the Lexington Area Par-
ty an.

A: I can understand the reasoning behind it and the
solution they’re going after. You really do have to address
the problem which is noise and overall destruction of
people’s privacy and personal property We have to be re-
spectful of other people’s rights, but I don’t want to de-
stroy other people’s rights, either, to defend my own. I
think it's a violation of individual rights. It's deliberately
subjecting students as opposed to other bodies of people.
The party plan was imposed as opposed to creatively pro-
duced by cooperation and therefore, I took it to be offen-
s1ve.

Q What would you propose as an alternative solution
to the problem of disruptive parties in campus neighbor-
hoods?

A The university actually needs to have partying-
type facilities. Students are limited to the income that
they have which. often times, is their rent. So. where do
they party? It has to be their homes. They have to learn to
respect their neighbors, and that respect should be en-
forced. Problems must be addressed. but I'm wanting to
include students so they have the opportunity to party on
the university campus, to party in facilities that are feasi-
ble and cheap enough to use and gather in at hours that
don't disturb someone else's rights and privileges.

Q Do you agree with DeCamp that neighborhood
stability is the most important issue in District 3?

A In District 3, UK’s relationship and the students‘
relationship with their neighbors and their town are ex
tremely vital. What has become the threat to neighbor
hood stability have been not only the university and its
power of condemnation, but also the university has liter-
ally moved into and destroyed certain parts of our town
and community with very poor planning. The city itself
has been a participant in that with its own poor planning,
and the landlords have become very oppressive of stu-
dents by their high prices. Students. therefore, become
very destructive of property simply because they over-
crowd it, it’s not maintained well and it’s not valued by
the landlords. The university, by its demolition of neglect.
lets some of these properties go down too.

Q How do you view the recently proposed Keg Plan?
Do you feel it could significantly reduce the amount of
underage drinking among UK students at parties?

A This kind of law is deliberately established to con-
trol or watch student drinking. I take ofl’ense to it because

Exploring Goodkind's Naked Empire

eycmtaiume

STAN “RITE!

Though the heady antici~
pation of Harry Potter has
lost its potency and The Lord
of the Rings: The Return of
the King doesn't hit theaters
until December. the fantasy
genre continues to thrive.

Thanks, in part to au—
thor Terry Goodkind. whose
own brand of fantasy deals
with Confessors. gars and a
very rare person with a
unique sword.

The author will be sign-
ing his works at 7 pm. Fri-
day at Joseph-Beth Book-
sellers. promoting the eighth
installment of his best-sell-
ing Sword of Truth series.
Naked Empire.

"Writing is my bliss,"
Goodkind said on his web-
site. "It's the thing I absolute-
ly love to do more than any-
thing I‘ve ever done in my
life."

Goodkind. who burst
onto the fantasy scene in
1994 with Wizard '3 First Rule,

has created a universe in
which truth and uncondi-
tional love are constantly
dogged by greed and lust for
power. His novels examine
heartache. triumph and hu-
mility, while combining tra~
ditional elements of fantasy:
dragons. magic, wizards and
an epic quest for good in the
face of evil.

It‘s the universal themes
that Goodkind seamlessly
weaves into his work that de-
fies one simple labei. such as
fantasy.

"Readers make a huge
mistake if they come to my
books because they think
they will just be reading
about magic." Goodkind said
in an interview. “That's like
going to a rock concert just
to see hairdos. To think that
these stories are about magic
is to miss the true magic of
the story."

Naked Empire continues
the saga of his two central
characters, Richard Rahl. the
Seeker of Truth. and Mother

Confessor Kahlan Amnell.

The series began with
Kahlan's character and grew
from there.

“It really became a
haunting experience," Good-
kind said. “As soon as I start-
ed writing Wizard's First
Rule, I knew writing was my
calling. I‘ve found something
to which I truly want to dedi-
cate my life."

Writing takes up most of
Goodkind's time. sometimes
up to 14 hours each day.

"When I’m not writing, I
generally feel I’m wasting
time," Goodkind said. “I put
absolutely everything I have
into the book I'm working
on. I feel that if I held back
or saved anything, I'd be
cheating myself and my
readers. I write at the ragged
edge of my ability, always
pushing the envelope; I feel
that I owe that to readers."

The sheer scope of Good-
kind's work is of Tolkien-
like proportions. The author
not only formulated a lan-

guage for his novels (High
D’Haran), but also drew the
map of Richard and Kahlan‘s
world. which is included in
the books.

"Art helps me with my
writing," Goodkind said. "I
think it helps me bring tex-
ture and life to my (work)."

His courtesy to readers
is apparent as well.

"I have always consid-
ered it an honor that readers
would give me that most pre-
cious of commodities: time,"
Goodkind said. “I feel duty-
bound to give them value in
return for their investment."

Goodkind ultimately
hopes to break down precon-
ceived notions of the fantasy
genre.

"My goal is to expand the
idea of just what fantasy is
and have more people come
to enjoy it,” Goodkind said.
“It might seem I’m writing
something outside the realm
of our experience, but in
fact, I‘m trying to illustrate
those things we all share."

Ice-T and Body Count performed at Starlight Music Club Wednesday
July 23. Ice-T said he enjoys the smaller "packed" atmosphere.

ICE-T

Continued from page l

Ice-T has spent the sum-
mer touring between tapings
of "Law & Order."

"We‘ve got 25 Body Count
gigs. and then I am going to
Europe to do SMG, my new
rap band," he said.

Ice-T described the cur-
rent tour as a "tune-up" for
the band before they head to
the studio to cut a new a1-
bum scheduled for release
next spring.

In the last 20 years. Ice-T
has come a long way from

the Newark projects. With 29
films, more than 15 albums,
and a successful television
series under his belt, Ice-T
has no intentions of slowing
down.

"You start playing that
guitar with nobody listening.
If your fans leave. and you
still enjoy playing that gui-
tar, you should continue to
do it. I don‘t think you
should ever give it up." he
said.

However. his desires for
the next decade are much
simpler.

"Hopefully: I'll be breath-
ing. That's the whole object
of the game when you‘re
black - just to keep breath-
ing. Wherever I am at. if I do
that. then I am winning."

From Little to Muhammad: Former Assistant Coach
Muhammad to take on role as GymKats head coach

By ‘I’orra Ramsdale
SPORTSWEEKLY EDITOR

As Mitch Barnhart and
staff prepare for another ex-
citing year with UK athletics.
they have one more coaching
change to add to the lineup.

Former UK gymnastics
assistant coach Hajile “Mo“
Muhammad joins Mickie
DeMoss. Rich Brooks and
John Cohen as one of UK‘s
newest head coaches.

GymKats head coach
Leah Little resigned from the
program in April after 28
years of leading the team
from club status to Division I
competitors. Little built the
program from the ground up
starting in 1974. Replacing
her meant bringing in a new
coach for the first time in the
programs history

Coach Mo. who has been
with the GymKats since fall
1997. knew he wanted the job.
but also knew that he would
have to apply just like every-
one else. Barnhart and his
staff did not show any fa
voritism to Muhammad be-
cause of his position with
the team. Muhammad had to
wait through the process and
hope that his credentials and
background would prove his
ability to take over as head
coach.

“I didn't expect (to be of
fered) the job." Muhammad
said. “(UK) has a new athlet-
ics director and his mission
was to do (the) best for UK
and every sport. I had to ap-
ply and hope that my back-
ground and credentials
spoke for themselves.“

Muhammad graduated
from the University of Hous-
ton in 1995 with a degree in
engineering. Though he has
yet to apply his degree to his
career. Muhammad has
coached for 23 years. 12 of
which were spent as a clini-
cian at regional and national
conventions in Texas.

As assistant coach under
Little, Muhammad was in
charge of recruiting as well
as planning and scheduling
workouts and handling the
budget and equipment. With

his new position as head
coach. Muhammad will con-
tinue with the same respon-
sibilities. as well as schedul-
ing meets and delegating re-
sponsibility to other staff
members.

“I will be doing most of
the same things as Leah
did." Muhammad said. “But
I won’t be as hands on with
events as she was.“

Little‘s legacy at UK
leaves big shoes for Muham-
mad to fill. In her 28 years at
UK, Little created a club
sport that advanced to a var-
sity sport in 1980 due to Title
IX laws. In the past 23 years,
the GymKats have reached
the NCAA regionals 16 times
and Little was named SEC
Coach of the Year twice.

Muhammad acknowl-
edges that he has a tough
path to follow. but has set his
hopes high and believes he
can fulfill what is needed of
him.

“I plan on picking up
where Leah left off and tak-
ing the team to the next lev-
cl." Muhammad said.

Muhammad. named as-
sistant coach of the year in
1999 and 2002. has earned the
respect of his colleagues and
the administration he works
for. With a background that
dates back to his sophomore
year in high school when he
began coaching gymnastics.
Muhammad has shown that
his love for gymnastics will
take him and the team he is
leading as far as they want.

Muhammad's decision to
stay at UK and pursue the
head coach position shows
his commitment and dedica-
tion to the team and the girls
he has taken the time to re-
cruit and coach. It also
shows his respect for the ad-
ministration and school to
say that this is a job worth
sticking around for.

“It is the University of
Kentucky" Muhammad said.
“The administration wants
to be successful and they
give us (coaches) what we
need to be successful. If you
are going to be a coach in the
NCAA, this is one of best
jobs to have."

Coach Mo wants GymKats 0n next level

Kobe website is
; unscrupulous

A website has surfaced after the accusation from a 19
year-old wotnan that Kobe Bryant sexually assaulted her
in a (‘olorado hotel in which she worked.

The site. hit p: www.freekobecom. states that the in-
tention of their site is to make a stand for “for basic
American freedoms such as a fair and impartial investiga-
tion and the idea that someone. even Kobe Bryant. is in-
nocent until proven guilty"

The website indicates its designers were shocked
when Bryant was arrested. Furthermore. the website
paints a favorable view of Bryant through the developers'
personal opinions,

A quote from the site says. "The
idea of Kobe Bryant charged with sex
ual assault is troubling to many. as it
should be. but the true sports fan
sticks by the side of one of the all-time
greats until given valid reasons to the
contrary. So consider Kobe's past. his
reputation. his personality his loving
wife and child. before jumping to con-
clusions about the Kobe Bryant sexual
assault allegations. Free Kobe?"

Though this website tries to depict
itself as a site devoted to fighting for basic rights guaran-
teed by the constitution for the sake of Bryant, the real
motivation behind this site is to reap money from this
newsworthy . and for some ,, emotional issue. The site
sells merchandise ranging from t-shirts to thongs with the
imprinted words “Free Kobe." Most of the merchandise
sells in the $20 price range.

The site has had 646.503 total visits since its creation
on July 22. 2003. It averages over 80.000 hits per day.

in one day. if 10 percent of the individuals who visit
the Free Kobe site purchase a t-shirt for twenty dollars.
the site owners accumulate 8160.000. In a week the site
would amass over a million dollars if 8.000 t-shirts were
sold everyday

But. not to worry. The creators of the website have do-
nated over $1.000 to support gender equality in sports.

This website is capitalism at its finest or worst. de-
pending on one's outlook. The creators of the site will ac-
cumulate millions of dollars by taking advantage of a sen-
sitive situat ion, The site is using Bryant's fan base and his
appeal to invoke individuals to visit the site and purchase
apparel to display their support for Bryant.

The site does not take into account the troubles and
tribulations the 19-year-old woman is experiencing by
pressing charges against Bryant. The site does not care
about the woman or Bryant. instead. it only cares about
earning money.

The premise of making money from a sensitive situa-
tion is unethical, it is highly unethical to draw more spot-
light toward a woman who is pressing charges against a
highly prominent figure. It is extremely unethical to
abuse Bryant‘s fan base by suckering them into purchas-
ing clothes. it is grossly unethical to say one is assisting
in gender equality in sports when they're racking up vast
amounts of money. only donating a meager thousand dol-
Iars

So remember. by purchasing apparel from the site.
one is aiding an unethical individual. who is driven by
capitalism. to live out the American dream — being filthy
rich

Boy. am I glad that I stayed
here this summer. I‘ve learned so
much and met so many people.
ranging from Tom Morello to
Scoobie Ryan. I will be handing
over the managing editor role to
Sara Cunningham. I’ll head back
to the sports desk and I’ll serve
as assistant sports editor and
football beat writer. I‘d like to
thank Miss Patsy for feeding us.
ads peeps. Buck Ryan. C.P.. EZ

Goins. Drew. Chris. Derek and everyone for helping
out and making this summer great. I‘d also like to
thank Jewel for inspiring me to become a rock jour-
nalist. U R GR8 Jewel. Derek has fired me over 900
times this summer, not that I didn’t fire him. Thank
God I don't have to work with him again.

What a nightmare it was
working with Jeff Patterson.
That guy‘s a control freak. A few
weeks in. he went all Martha
Stewart on us and redecorated
half of the journalism building.
Seriously though, it's been a
great summer ., a phatty beast of
a summer to put it in the words
of Kernel alum Scott Lashinsky -
and while ['11 be doing a little bit
of traveling (NOTD.net road trip
to see Radiohead in St. Louis) between now and the
beginning of the fall semester. I can't wait to get
back and help with photography and production.
writing and sweeping floors. etc. Personal thanks to
Buck Ryan. Chris “Not my dad" Poore, Miss Petey,
the unprecedented interaction with the ads staff.
Chris and Drew for stellar production and Jeff. I
guess he's so fired. Well. he had a great run. Of

But what he doesn't know won't hurt him. I guooo.
