     Biographical Note
John Tuska was an artist in a variety of mediums, particularly sculpture and pottery, but also sketching, painting, and photography. Tuska was born in 1931 in Yokon, Pennsylvania, a coal mining community. His parents were Slovakian immigrants. In 1937, his family moved to New York City during the Depression, where he attended the High School of Music and Art. After graduation, he spent a year at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University before being drafted into the Navy, serving for two years. He was stationed in Tokyo, Japan, where he discovered the work of Japanese potters including Rosanjin, Kawai, and Hamada. Tuska returned to Alfred University with a renewed level of respect for the art of pottery. He resumed his studies, delving into glaze technology, ceramic engineering, and design. He graduated from Alfred University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (1959) and Master of Fine Arts (1960) degrees. At Alfred, he also met his muse, Miriam Judith Gittleman, who became his wife in 1956. Sons Seth and Stephen soon followed. In 1960, Tuska became assistant professor of art at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky. In 1963, he moved to the University of Kentucky in Lexington. From 1969-1970, the family lived in Rome, where Tuska discovered the medium of bronze and a fascination with the movement of the human form. Tuska retired from the University of Kentucky in 1994. He died in 1998.
Tuska completed four major sculpture commissions: Genesis (1969) and Illumine (1995) at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY; Flight of Icarus (1974) at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN; and the portrait of Senator John Sherman Cooper (1984) for the Kentucky State Capitol, Frankfort, KY.-He provided a series of drawings for poet Alvin Greenberg's publication The House of the Would-be Gardener (NY: New Rivers Press, 1972). In addition, his work is in the collections of the Evansville Museum of Arts and Science, Evansville, IN; Georgetown College, Georgetown, KY; Krannert Art Museum, Champaign-Urbana, IL; Palmer Art Museum, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA; Schein-Joseph International Museum of Ceramic Art, Alfred, NY; and the University of Kentucky Art Museum, Lexington, KY. Tuska's work has also been acquired for numerous corporate collections, including Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Elizabethtown, KY; Phillip Morris Corporation, Louisville, KY; and KFC Corporation, Louisville, KY.
