Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- David Herndon and his wife, Mary Moorman Herndon, came to Kentucky from Virginia in the early nineteenth century. They settled on farmland extending through Meade and Breckinridge counties before moving on to Missouri. One of their sons, Richard S. Herndon, maintained and added to the Kentucky farm. Another son, William Herndon, settled in Texas, and a third, J.M. Herndon, moved to Missouri with his parents. The Herndons also had a daughter, Laetitia Herndon Heth.
- Scope and Content
- The Herndon family papers are a collection of the personal and business papers of the Herndon family. The collection includes letters, deeds, wills, court settlements, indentures, daybooks, farm records, account statements, receipts, expense books, and genealogical information on the Herndon, Bate, and Washington families.
- The letters were most often addressed to Richard Herndon in Kentucky from his relatives, and they contain information about farming and living conditions in Kentucky, Missouri, Texas, Louisiana, and the Dakota Territory in the nineteenth century. A group of letters concerns the operation of the Grayson Springs Hotel in Grayson County, Kentucky, a popular summer resort at the time. There are also some Civil War-era letters. Letters from Richard's son, David C. Herndon, describe his settlement in the Dakota Territory in the 1880s. The majority of the tax receipts relate to Richard Herndon.
- While some of the expense books have dates, the relation between a date and a book's contents is not always clear. As a result, and to provide continuity with the grouping of these items, the expense books are all placed in the undated "Expense books" folder. Aside from this particular folder and the other folder for undated material, the general arrangement of the remainder of the collection reflects the collection's original organization.
