Collection Overview

Biography / History
Emanuel G. Weiss was a Philadelphia attorney who clerked for Stanley Forman Reed, Associate Justice on the Supreme Court, during the 1945-1946 term. Weiss was born on October 10, 1919 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Harry and Mae Weiss, both of whom were born in the United States and descended from Russian Jewish immigrants. In 1941, Weiss graduated from Harvard University and subsequently attended Harvard Law School, where he became a member of the Harvard Law Review. After completing law school in 1944, he clerked for the Honorable Calvert Magruder of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. In 1945, Justice Reed selected Weiss to become his law clerk for the 1945-1946 term.
Following his clerkship in Washington D.C., Weiss returned to Philadelphia where he worked for a law firm until opening his own civil practice, which he maintained for nearly forty years. Weiss passed away on February 24, 2004 in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He had two children, Randall Weiss and Linda Levitsky (nee Weiss).
