Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Harriet Drury Van Meter (1911-1997), a native of Fulton, Illinois, was the daughter of a candy manufacturer who invented the lemon drop and World War I "service stars," a forerunner of the Hershey Kiss. She attended the University of Kentucky in 1929 where, after a near fatal illness, she met her physician husband Dr. J. Farra Van Meter (1897-1979).
- The Van Meters had three children, and Harriet became a Lexington community activist serving on numerous boards and committees. By the 1940s she was the president of the Lexington Traveller's Aid Society; a representative of the Fayette County Council for Social Planning; and a member of the Junior League, the League of Women Voters, the State Welfare Conference, the YWCA, the State Mental Hygiene Board, the Cancer Control Board, the Community Forum Board, The Community Concert Board, the West End Foundation Board, and the Board of Education at the Maxwell Presbyterian Church. During World War II, she served as a Red Cross nurse's aid. In 1944, the Chi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, the young businesswoman's sorority, recognized Harriett as Lexington's Outstanding Woman for 1944.
- Following the war, the Van Meters hosted numerous students and their families who were attending the University of Kentucky in increasing numbers. Between 1955 and 1965, the Van Meters held Sunday night open houses and dinners twice a month for foreign students and those American students who wanted to meet them. In 1961, Harriet received the University's Sullivan Award for her work with students, and in 1965 the US State Department selected her to be part of an around the world trip with professional foreign student advisors. Following the official trip, Van Meter spent a month in India traveling to small villages where she visited homes and schools.
- It was on this trip that Harriet Van Meter became aware of India's poverty and the country's need for reading material in a common language. In 1966 she sent a letter to the editor of an Indian newspaper offering to send books and food to the country. She was deluged with letters requesting books, not food. Operating out of her basement and employing her friends, Harriet created the International Book Project (IBP), which has sent millions of books worldwide to schools, libraries, orphanages, and other institutions. In 1992, the IBP was one of twenty organizations chosen as a Partner for Peace for the services it provides to Peace Corps programming. Harriet, who retired as head of the International Book Project in 1986, was one of eight finalists for the Nobel Prize that year. In addition, she was the recipient of the 1989 Kiwanis International World Service Medal.
- Scope and Content
- The Harriet Drury Van Meter papers (dated 1910-1990; 3 cubic feet; 10 boxes) comprise correspondence, diaries, scrapbooks, travel documents, and photographs that document her family life, travel, and work with international students at the University of Kentucky and clubs in Lexington, Kentucky. Her personal papers from her early life include a report card, poem she wrote, and family photograph albums that show the Drury family playing, on vacation, and with pets. A scrapbook from high school includes pressed flowers, dance cards, programs, and photographs pasted onto its pages. The bulk of the collection pertains to Harriet Drury Van Meter's work and interest with international students at the University of Kentucky and creating a more just world through improved international relations. There are many international letters from former students, who would invite Harriet and Dr. Van Meter to their weddings and update them with pictures of their growing families and career developments. Harriet and Dr. Van Meter's love of travel is reflected in the files on countries they visited or wanted to visit: India, Japan, Pakistan. Additionally, the papers include records for the social club founded by Van Meter in Lexington, Kentucky, known as the International Woman's Club.
