Collection Overview

Biography / History
The history of this collection is unknown but many of the lantern slides in Series X duplicate images in other Kentucky collections such as the C. Frank Dunn Photographs Collection, the Louis Edward Nollau F Series Photographic Print Collection, and the Women’s Club of Central Kentucky Slide Collection, 1900-1915.
Scope and Content
The University of Kentucky Classroom lantern slides were used for classroom instruction and lecture at the Agricultural and Mechanical School, the Kentucky State College, and the University of Kentucky. The subjects include the construction of the Panama Canal; Kentucky State College buildings, classrooms and campus life; mining and road construction in Kentucky; construction of the Torresdale Conduit; the School of Mechanical Engineering classes in Direct Connected Machinery, Machine Design, Foundry, Machinery, Forging and Casting; the College of Agriculture classes “Better Sires Equal Better Stock” campaign, Water Well and Pump Installation, local crop production, and livestock performance; Radio Listening Centers; local Kentucky history depicting famous Kentuckians, frontier and pioneer life, Fort Harrod, the Battle of Perryville, and scenery from the Mammoth Cave and Cumberland Falls areas of Kentucky. The contents have been described at the item level.

Public Relations

Scope and Contents note

The Public Relations series contains one hundred thirty-five images of the University of Kentucky from 1900 to 1930. Subjects include copies of portraits of the faculty and administration, student life, campus buildings (exterior views of campus buildings, library, dorms, classrooms, hothouse, nursery, arboretum, observatory, cafeteria, dining hall), marching and concert bands, athletic teams, and the Reserve Officers Training Corps. The collection also includes slides pertaining to the Radio Listening Centers which covers slides of rural interviews, families and individuals listening to a radio, interiors and exteriors of some rural homes, and some mountain scenery. Better Sires Program

Scope and Contents note

Better Sires Program contains thirty-four slides that were used during the 1920s and includes views of various grades of cattle, sheep, swine, and poultry. They were used to illustrate and promote a “Better Sires Equal Better Stock” campaign. It is presumed that this series of slides was also used for classroom instruction and lecture in the College of Agriculture. Item numbers 770 through 803.

Scope and Contents note

The Kentucky History series has an assortment of three hundred thirty-nine images that are related in some way to the University of Kentucky and Kentucky history. The slides were used during the 1930s and 1940s in classroom instruction and lecture. The following subjects are included: Kentucky maps, landscape scenes, Mammoth Cave, The Tennessee Valley Authority Dam, architecture, famous Kentuckians, monuments and cemeteries, newspaper articles of a historical nature, steam engine design, steamboats and railroads, pioneer life and instruments, covered bridges, road construction, livestock, industry (including coal, tobacco, hemp, lime, and oil), Fort Harrod, Cumberland Falls, and the Battle of Perryville.
