Biographical note
Paul Sawyier was born in Madison County, Ohio, March 23, 1865, to a family of amateur artists. In 1870, the family moved to Frankfort, Kentucky. Sawyier attended the Cincinnati Art Academy in 1884-1885 and then returned to Frankfort in 1886. There he began painting river scenes and landscapes. Sawyier continued his art studies in New York and Cincinnati, then returned again to Frankfort where he concentrated on landscape painting in a variety of media, including his favorite, watercolor. In 1913, he returned to New York and was commissioned to paint for New York art dealer Edward Jackson. Paul Sawyier died and was buried in Fleischmann, New York, in 1917, but his remains were moved to Frankfort Cemetery in 1923. Sawyier's artwork is best known in Kentucky. Popular prints include Wapping Street Fountain, The Old Capitol, Winter in Kentucky, and Old Covered Bridge.

Scope and Contents
The Paul Sawyier photographs (dated 1886, undated; 0.25 cubic feet; 10 items) include nine photographic images taken by Kentucky artist Paul Sawyier and one carte-de-visite by Frankfort photographer H. G. Mattern. The photographs depict different scenes around Frankfort, Kentucky, presumably to use as subjects for Sawyier's paintings. His photographs include seven albumen prints and two copy prints. The carte-de-visite by Mattern depicts a parrot.
