Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Mack Hughes lived and worked as a professional photographer in Lexington, Kentucky. His studio/office was located at 503 East High Street. Harry Mack Hughes received an A.B. in Journalism in 1939 from the University of Kentucky where he was a member of Delta Sigma Chi, was the football manager, and on the golf team. He also worked for or was a member of the Kernel staff, the Sour Mash, the Kentuckian, and the Camera Club. Many of his photographs were published in local newspapers. He died on May 10, 1962; these materials were obtained from a sale of his professional equipment.
- Scope and Content
- The Mack Hughes negatives consist of 3,128 items. This collection primarily consists of negatives from the football and basketball teams in the early 1950s. There are a few photographic prints that are portraits of football players and basketball players. A very small amount of the collection is devoted to golf, track and swimming. There is also a section of Lambda Chi materials primarily dealing with the push cart derby and formals. The first four negatives in the collection are archaeology-related but have no relation to the rest of the collection with the exception of the creator.
- The majority of the collection is of football and basketball negatives. There are both individuals and groups represented. The majority of the players are identified. If unidentified by name they are usually identified by player number. Some of the group shots are of entire teams from a certain year. Some of the games are also represented and are usually classified by teams and dates.
- The last part of the collection does not have University of Kentucky affiliations. The negatives consist of weddings, real estate and other private enterprise. There are also many family portraits. Some early businesses in Lexington are represented as well. These negatives are generally from the early to mid 1950s.
