Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- James Edwin "Ed" Weddle was born October 12, 1911. After serving in the Second World War, he moved to Lexington, Kentucky and began to work as a photographer for the Lexington Leader in 1947.
- At some point in the late 1950s, Weddle quit the Leader and began to work as a freelance photographer. In 1962 he opened Cross Country Fotos (sic) at 205 West Short Street. Weddle specialized in aerial photography, advertising work, construction projects, horse racing, and University of Kentucky basketball and football.
- Weddle sold photographs to the Lexington Leader, Lexington Herald, the Lexington Herald-Leader, the Associated Press, and United Press International. He also photographed for the Red Mile Racetrack, in Lexington and contributed images to A Century of Speed: The Red Mile, 1875-1975 by Biff Lowry. His work also appeared in Thoroughbred Record, a magazine about breeding and racing horses. (In 1990, Thoroughbred Record was incorporated into Thoroughbred Times, which is on-going.) Ed Weddle died in 1989.
- Scope and Content
- The James Edwin Weddle Photographic Collection (dated 1948-1981; 32 cubic feet; 66 boxes) consists of 10946 items, 4744 photographic prints and 6202 negatives, representing the freelance news and sports photography archive of Ed Weddle and work done in conjunction with his business, Cross Country Fotos (sic). Silver developing out prints in both fiber and resin coated (RC) backing make up the bulk of the collection, but some color prints are present. The prints have been arranged by subject matter and described on an item level with either their original captions or a descriptive summary written by UK AV Archives. Due to the duplicative nature of the negatives, only the prints have been digitized for online access. Additionally, the only images available online are those whose copyright is not held by the AP or the UPI.
