Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Born in 1898 in Bandana, Kentucky, William Hugh Peal graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1922 and from Oxford University in 1925, where he matriculated with a Bachelor of Civil Laws degree as one of Kentucky's first Rhodes Scholars. Peal spent much of his career practicing law in New York, where he was admitted to the bar in 1928. He was a partner in the firm Chadburne, Parke, Whiteside, Wolff and Brophy until 1955, when he became a senior partner in the Manhattan firm of Hardy, Peal, Barker, and Rawlings.
- Peal's lifelong interest in Charles Lamb and English Romantic writers began when he received a copy of Charles and Mary Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare as a child. His family instilled in him a devotion to reading, particularly to 19th-century English literature. This allegiance to literature would remain with Peal throughout his life. As a University of Kentucky undergraduate, Peal learned to read French, German, and Latin and served as president of the Patterson Literary Society. While advancing from law clerk to firm partner, Peal continued to pursue his interest in the literary arts as a member of the University of Kentucky's Library Associates program and as a fellow of the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York. During this time, Peal became acquainted with Manhattan''s rare books dealers and antiquarians, with whom he actively worked to build his personal collection. An avid bibliophile, Peal amassed a collection of more than 12,000 volumes and 7,000 manuscripts.
- In the 1960s, Peal retired and moved with his wife to an estate near Leesburg, Virginia. A longtime benefactor of UK Libraries, Peal donated a substantial portion of his collection of books and manuscripts to the university in 1981. He passed away in 1984.
- Scope and Content
- The W. Hugh Peal manuscript collection (dated circa 1448-1987, undated; 43.94 cubic feet; 86 boxes, 4 oversize boxes, 22 items) comprises historical and literary manuscripts, portrait prints, and autograph albums that were collected by University of Kentucky graduate William Hugh Peal and reflect the Kentucky native's keen interest in 19th century writers and intellectuals.
- The majority of the collection consists of manuscript correspondence, both loose and in bound volumes and autograph albums. The collection also features manuscript poems and writings, signed documents, and typescript biographical clippings on an array of scholars and preeminent cultural figures from the 15th century to the 20th century.
- Much of the collection is built upon a foundation of manuscript works by 19th-century English Romantic writers and their contemporaries, with a focus on first-generation Romantics Charles Lamb, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Southey, and William Wordsworth. Particular emphasis is placed on writings by Charles Lamb and noted Lamb scholars Alfred Ainger, Edward Verrall Lucas, Ernest Dressel North, and Thomas Noon Talfourd, with an additional bound volume of manuscript letters written to Lamb by his friend Thomas Manning.
- Additional Romantic writers in the collection include Lord Byron, Mary Shelley, Thomas De Quincey, and William Dean Howells. Victorian writers include Charles Dickens, William Makepeace Thackeray, George Eliot, Thomas Hardy, Robert Browning, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and lesser-known 19th-century writers Frank Arthur Swinnerton, William Harrison Ainsworth, George Henry Borrow, dramatist Edmund Yates, and his theatre manager father Frederick Henry Yates.
- In addition to manuscripts by British literary figures, there are manuscripts by British artists and statesmen, American and French authors, European royalty and judiciaries, and a variety of politicians, scientists, abolitionists, clergymen, and distinguished scholars. Key figures include painter John Everett Millais, historian James Anthony Froude, mathematician and judge John Fletcher Moulton, and bishop Brooke Foss Westcott. Also included are autograph albums of legal manuscripts from the collection of antiquary Sir Thomas Phillipps.
- The manuscript collection is augmented by the correspondence, journals, and personal papers of W. Hugh Peal, with notes, accession lists, and invoices that document the Kentucky collector's acquisition process and literary interests.
- Processing Info
- When available, Peal's accession numbers were attributed to the relevant collection items. Transcripts, translations, and summaries of manuscripts were maintained alongside the original manuscripts.
- Legacy descriptions of Peal items and albums that were written by researchers and University of Kentucky students were incorporated during processing. Series-level descriptions were incorporated from the following legacy calendars: a calendar of American authors in the Peal collection compiled in 1993 by Lynne Edington, a calendar of Robert Southey letters compiled in 1992 by Beth Jane Toren, a calendar of Samuel Taylor Coleridge letters compiled in 1991 by Richard W. Scott, and a calendar of the Marie Melchior Joseph Théodore de Lagrené autograph albums compiled in 2007 by Mary C. Johnson. Item-level descriptions were not incorporated, including the transcripts of the first lines of each item listed in the Southey calendar, partial transcripts of select items in the Coleridge calendar, and descriptions and translations of items in the Lagrené albums.
