Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The Blue Grass Trust for Historic Preservation (BGT) was formed in 1955 under the name Foundation for Preservation of Historic Lexington and Fayette County. Its original purpose was to purchase and restore the Hunt-Morgan House located at 201 North Mill Street in Gratz Park in Lexington, Kentucky. Currently, the BGT operates the Hunt-Morgan House Museum and provides a suite of historic preservation programs and services aimed at education and advocacy for the preservation movement in Lexington and central Kentucky.
- Since 1955, the BGT has purchased, restored, or sold with deed restrictions many properties in the Lexington area. Some of this work was funded through revolving funds: the BGT bought a house, stabilized it, then resold it with restrictions to someone who would restore it. Five notable structures that the BGT has helped to restore are The Hunt-Morgan House (sometimes referred to as Hopemont or the John Hunt-Morgan House), Benjamin Latrobe's Pope Villa/Pope House, the Adam Rankin House (oldest house in Lexington), the Henry Clay Law Office, and the Stilfield log cabin. Currently, the BGT is steward of the Hunt-Morgan House, Latrobe's Pope Villa, the Dr. Thomas Hunt-Morgan House, and the Endicott Cottage. The BGT also assisted in the restoration of the Dudley House in Gratz Park, Shakertown at Pleasant Hill, and helped the Commonwealth of Kentucky purchase and restore the Mary Todd Lincoln House.
- A main goal of the BGT is urban beautification and renewal by saving and maintaining historic homes in Lexington. Programs of the Blue Grass Trust that relate to this include placing oval BGT plaques on historic houses that are at least 50 years old or older; compiling histories of historic houses and structures in Lexington; providing original architectural descriptions of houses to restorers; and working with neighborhoods, individuals, and the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government to do the research and advocacy necessary for the designation of historic districts and historic zones in Lexington. The BGT's Paint Partnership is a grant program operated by Blue Grass Trust that oversees the distribution of funds to low- and moderate-income homeowners for the purchase of historically-accurate paint colors. The program started in 1984.
- The Blue Grass Trust also conducts annual events for the purposes of fundraising, education and awareness. At various times, annual events have included the Antiques Show/Lexington Garden and Antiques Show, Historic Preservation Week, the Pope Villa Seminars, BGT deTours, the Holiday Market, Christmas in Gratz Park, Summer in Gratz Park, and Historic Preservation Week. Since 1976, the BGT has published a newsletter (variously titled "Preservation News," "Community Preservation, " and "Preservation Matters"). All but the Pope Villa Seminars and the BGT deTours are documented through the early 2000s in the records.
- The BGT is run by a Board of Directors, an Executive Committee, and an Advisory Board. Paid staff include an Executive Director and Preservation Specialists and Associates. Many others are volunteers.
- Through the early 2000s, the following have been President of the Board of Directors (in chronological order): Joseph Graves, Sr. (1955-1959), Hillary Boone (1960-1963), Joseph Graves, Jr. (1964-1967), Burton Milward (1968-1969), William Worth (1970-1971), Stanley Petter (1972-1973), Samuel Cassidy (1974-1975), John Barrow (1976-1977), Dorothy Crutcher (1978-1979), Richard Warren (1980-1981), John Kerr III (1982), Joyce Ockerman (1983), Marilyn Carter (1984), Elizabeth Wagner (1985), Gay Darsie (1986), Brian Sawyer (1987), Greg Fitzsimons (1988), David Humes (1989-1990), Elizabeth Wagner (1991), Barbara Hulette (1992-1993), Barbara Hulette/Mike Meuser (1994), Mike Meuser (1995-1996), Joanna Binford (1997), Stephen Amato (1998), Lee Ellen Martin (1999), James Milard (2000), and Meredith Moody (2003).

- Scope and Content
- The Blue Grass Trust for Historic Preservation records (dated 1920-2006 and undated, bulk 1955-2004 and undated; 49.72 cubic feet, 36 record storage cartons, 10 document boxes, 4 slim document boxes, 3 photograph boxes, 12 flat boxes, 10 tubes) comprise foundational documents; correspondence; Board of Directors meeting minutes and committee records; annual reports; historic preservation awards; publications; grant files and financial and strategic planning records; newspaper clippings and press releases; property surveys, leases, and appraisals; architectural drawings; and photographs, scrapbooks, and artifacts documenting the historic property preservation; historic neighborhood and historic building preservation advocacy; historic zoning political activity; and the museum, events, programs, and membership operations of the Blue Grass Trust in Lexington, Ky., from 1955 to 2006. Committee meeting minutes; planning, restoration, and education grants; architectural drawings; object inventories and insurance schedules; museum and volunteer management handbooks, policies, and subject files; and photographs in the Operating Files, Properties, Photographs, and Drawings and Blueprints record groups document the Trust's ongoing work to acquire, preserve, maintain, and market their historic house museum, the Hunt-Morgan House, and their historic preservation laboratory/house museum, Pope House/Pope Villa/Latrobe House, from 1955 to 2006. Overviews of the activities of the Trust can be found in annual reports (1961-1999, not complete) and the newsletters "Preservation News" (1976-1997, 2003-2004) and "Preservation Matters" (1998-2002) in the Operating Files record group. Articles of incorporation (1955 and 1974) and by-laws (1978-2002) can also be found in the Operating Files record group.
- Correspondence, committee meeting minutes, applications and nomination forms, photographs, surveys, appraisals, purchase agreements, architectural drawings, and information files document the Trust's involvement, since about 1965, in supporting the preservation of individual historic properties through their Paint Partnership (1975-1998) and Plaque (1970-1990) programs and through outright purchase; in giving awards honoring historic preservation projects and individuals (1976-2003); and in advocating for reuse and against the demolition of historic properties. Individual Board members and members of the Community Preservation, Preservation and Urban Development, and Revolving Fund committees worked with (and sometimes in opposition to) the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government's Division of Planning/Planning Commission and neighborhood groups--including Gratz Park, North Limestone, Northside Neighborhood Association, South Broadway, South Limestone, South Hill, West Short Street, and Woodward Heights Neighborhood Association-- to establish historic districts and historic zoning, especially in downtown neighborhoods in Lexington. Individual properties, blocks, or neighborhoods are listed in the finding aid by address and/or name in the Properties record group or in the applications folders for the Paint Partnership program in the Operating Files record group. Photographs of properties and streets are included in these files and can also be found in the Photographs record group. Committees, allied organizations, and awards are listed in the Operating Files record group.
- In order to raise funds for its historic preservation and advocacy operations, the Trust conducts annual and ad hoc events and membership development activities, applies for grants, and undertakes capital campaigns. Correspondence; committee meeting minutes; schedules; financial information; posters and pamphlets; sponsor and participating organizations lists and invitations; news releases and publicity; and photographs in the Operating Files record group (Events series and Photograph Albums series) and in the Photographs record group document the planning, funding, marketing and advertising, and execution of, among other events, annual the Antiques/Lexington Garden and Antique Show (1980-2006), Christmas in Gratz Park (1977-1992), Summer in Gratz Park (1982-1992), Historic Preservation Week (1983-1996), and the Holiday Market (1984-1992). Correspondence, applications, and reports for successful and unsuccessful historic building preservation, historic preservation education, museum assessment, and strategic planning grants from various governmental and private funders, 1955-2003, can be found in both the Operating Files and Properties record groups. Consultant and Board of Directors correspondence, proposals, and reports; press kits; brochures; and membership and donor solicitation letters document the strategic planning, capital campaign, and membership drives undertaken by the Trust. These records can be found throughout the Operating Files record group. There is not a full set of budgets, audits, or financial reports in the Financial Materials series, although the total date range is 1955-2004.
