Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- A.B. "Happy" Chandler started WVLK in 1947. At that time, the studios were located in Versailles, but the station maintained an office in Lexington, as well. Its call letters, which stood for "Versailles, Lexington, Kentucky" proclaimed its identification with both places.
- In 1951, real estate developer Garvice Kincaid acquired WVLK. He moved the main studios from the library in Versailles to Lexington - first to the Lafayette Hotel and then the Phoenix Hotel on Main Street. They remained in the Phoenix Hotel until 1980, when they moved into their current location in the Kincaid Towers. For the entire time, Paul Dunbar, known as PD, was the Chief Engineer. He retired in 1986.
- In the 1950s, WVLK adopted a rock and roll format. This proved to be a very popular move. Eventually they took over the top ratings spot from WAKY, a Louisville station popular in Lexington. WVLK was also a leader in sports broadcasting, with Claude Sullivan serving as the voice of the Kentucky Wildcat football and basketball teams during the 1950s and 1960s. He did Cincinnati Reds games from '63 to '67.
- Ralph Hacker became general manager of WVLK AM/FM in 1974. Notable on air personalities included Bill Cody, "Captain Tag" Veal with his helicopter traffic reports, and Jack "Catfish" Pattie.
- Much of the above information came from Francis Nash's Towers Over Kentucky: A History of Radio and Television in the Bluegrass State.
- Scope and Content
