Collection Overview

Biography / History
Nathan Parker (1825-1864) was born in Trimble, Kentucky, to Noah Parker and Nancy Hunter. Noah Parker was a tavern keeper, while Nathan became a farmer. He married Sophronia Lane, and they had eight children. He joined the Confederate Army and was appointed to the rank of major when the 4th Kentucky Cavalry formed in September 1862. He was killed in battle at Wythville, Virginia, on May 10, 1864.
Scope and Content
The Nathan Parker Civil War diary reproduction (dated 1861-1891; 0.03 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprises photographic reproductions of a diary kept by Nathan Parker that documents his experience as a Condederate soldier during the Civil War. The original diary is held by the Kentucky Historical Society. Parker was an officer in the Confederate Fourth Regiment Kentucky Cavalry, and his diary gives an account of an officer's life during the Civil War. Two notable battles he participated in are the capture of Fort Donelson and the Battle of Corinth. Two newspaper clippings about Parker, one from 1866 and one from 1891, are included in the journal.
