Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The University of Kentucky is the flagship, land-grant university for the Commonwealth of Kentucky located in Lexington, Kentucky. It was established by an Act of the Legislature in 1865 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky University (now Transylvania University). In 1878, the Legislature split A&M College from Kentucky University, and it became State College and began developing into a university. In 1908, the Legislature changed the name from State College to State University. In 1916, the Legislature again changed the name from State University to University of Kentucky.

- The University of Kentucky Portrait Print Collection (dated circa 1867-1995, undated; 65 cubic feet; 65 boxes) consists of photographic prints some of which were created and maintained in the course of University business and others were donated to the University Archives and Records Program. The collection is divided into seven series. The series are: Administration; Alumni / Student; Board of Trustees; Faculty / Staff; Presidents and Regents; Unidentified, and Visitors.
- The Administration series includes: chancellors, deans, directors, managers, superintendents, vice-presidents and others who are in university administration.
- The Alumni / Student series includes: students who either graduated or attended the University.
- The Board of Trustees series includes: Kentucky governors, student government presidents, business persons, first African American member, faculty representatives, judges, and other political office holders.

The Unidentified series includes prints of persons who have some relationship to the University but the name is unknown.
