Collection Overview

Biography / History
A publication comprised primarily of book reviews and articles about Appalachia, APPALACHIAN NOTES was established in 1972 by Berea College history professor Richard B. Drake. Drake edited the journal, which was issued quarterly during this period. It continued publication after Drake left as editor.
Scope and Content
This is principally correspondence, drafts of submitted articles, clippings, and published works relating to APPALACHIAN NOTES, a review of literature on Appalachia.
Materials are comprised of correspondence relating to the planning and establishment of APPALACHIAN NOTES; articles submitted for publication; general editorial correspondence; and materials from an Appalachian Resource Survey conducted by Drake in 1975 while he was on sabbatical. This survey gathered information on works on Appalachia available at certain libraries contacted by Drake. Included are survey questionnaires returned by the latter, Drake's notes on libraries, and other materials.
Principal correspondents include Lawrence S. Thompson and Thomas R. Ford, who assisted Drake in editing APPALACHIAN NOTES; printers Vicente Soler and Jim Granley; contributors; and others who reviewed articles for the journal. Notes, handwritten and typewritten drafts of reviews, correspondence reflecting editorial changes in submitted articles, and proof copies are present. These document the principal activities of Drake as editor and the steps involved in the publication of a small journal.
