Collection Overview

Biography / History
John Moylan was the son of a successful Irish merchant who immigrated to America along with many of his brothers. He established a textile and clothing business in Lexington, Kentucky in 1792. Moylan also served as a clothier to the Continental Army for numerous years, which eventually led him to close the store. After closing the store Moylan returned to Europe, where he later died in England.
Scope and Content
The John Moylan ledger (dated 1792-1794; 0.1 cubic feet; 1 item) consists of business transactions that took place in John Moylan's clothing and textile store in Lexington, Kentucky. Each patron had a page that lists items purchased as well as remaining balance owed. In most cases where a balance is owed the ledger indicates the date the balance is due. The writing is faded, but a few of the items still legible are hymn books, stationary, hats, blankets, and wine. Toward the back of the ledger, there are pages pertaining to a voyage to New Orleans; the items he purchased there to resell at his store in Lexington.
