Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Democratic Senator Walter Darlington "Dee" Huddleston (1926-2018) served in the Kentucky State Senate (1965-1972) and the United States Senate (1972-1984). Originally from Cumberland County, Kentucky, Huddleston served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his military service, he attended the University of Kentucky and worked in radio at multiple stations in Bowling Green, Elizabethtown, and Lousiville, Kentucky, before running for the State Senate in 1964. He ran for U.S. Senate in 1972, defeating Republican Louie B. Nunn.
- In his first term in the U.S. Senate, Huddleston was asked to serve on the Church Committee that investigated intelligence activities and led to the formation of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the creation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) Court. Huddleston was reappointed to the Intelligence Committee in every Congress in which he served. During that period, he authored legislation giving Congress statutory oversight authority of the nation's intelligence efforts. He also served as Vice Chair of the Select Committee on Undercover Activities. Huddleston became a member of the Appropriations Committee in 1975, serving on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee which oversaw virtually all military spending including major weapon systems
- Scope and Content
- The Walter D. Huddleston papers (dated 1937-1998, bulk 1972-1984; 700 cubic feet; 1624 boxes) consist of political papers, newspaper clippings, photographs, and scrapbooks pertaining to Walter D. Huddleston's public service as a United States Senator from 1973-1985. Every effort was made to maintain the original order of the files during archival processing. Each member of Sen. Huddleston's staff had his/her own filing system, and these individual systems were, when possible, kept intact.
- Of special interest are the files dealing with Huddleston's service on the Intelligence Committee, and constituent correspondence dealing with the Vietnam War, Watergate, and President Richard M. Nixon's resignation.
