Collection Overview

Biography / History
Eva Wellman (1854-1928) was born in Indiana to Robert Wellman (1830-1912) and Rebecca Guffin (1830-1890). Between 1871 and 1874, Eva attended the Western Female Seminary in Oxford, Ohio. In 1878, she married Lynford K. Amos (1852-1884). Together the couple had two sons, both who passed away while in infancy, Ross Amos (1880) and Guy Amos (1883). After the death of Lynford, Eva married a second time to Dewitt Clinton Buell (1854-1944) in 1890. Together they had two children, Scott (1890-1934) and Edith (1893-1970).
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Eva Wellman papers (dated 1867-1910, bulk 1870-1874; 0.29 cubic feet; 13 folders) comprise letters, receipts, and legal papers that document the life of Eva Wellman and friends and family in Indiana and Ohio in the second half of the nineteenth century. The letters sent to Eva come from friends and family, discussing school, daily life, personal health, Eva's romances, injuries, friends sneaking out, and social visits from friends and family. Other materials in the collection include a memorandum of agreement for rent payments, receipts for tax payments and personal goods, report cards, advertisements, and programs from events at Western Female Seminary.
The Eva Wellman papers are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
