Collection Overview

Biography / History
Pauline Elizabeth Bourne (1900-1983) was born in New York City, New York to Joseph Bourne (1867-1934) and Julia Chapin (1871-1967). About 1927, Pauline married Hendricks Vanderbilt Duryea (1900-1976), a photographer and photograph store owner.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Pauline Bourne-Duryea papers (dated 1899-1966, undated; 0.82 cubic feet; 2 document boxes, 1 flat box) comprise letters and photographs that document the social activities, trips taken, costs incurred, and daily life of Pauline Bourne-Duryea in the first half of the twentieth century. The letters are between Pauline, her family and extended relatives, friends, and her husband. Many of the letters discuss trips taken to England, Italy, France, Belgium, and Switzerland by Pauline, her parents, and her husband. There are letters from relatives and friends that discuss social events, visiting friends, and daily life in France, England, and New York City. Additionally, there are a great deal of letters between Pauline and her husband, Hendricks, while he was traveling in England for work that discuss friends he visited, seeing her parents, his work, and marital issues. Pauline has a few letters from her mother and friends that give advice and support on the marital issues between her and her husband. There are a few letters from Pauline's father that give itemized breakdowns of the costs that Pauline incurred while she was abroad and when her parents went abroad and left her home alone. While the majority are written in English, a few of the letters to Pauline are written in French. The photographs are of Pauline, her husband Hendricks, and her relatives. The majority of the photographs document Pauline's early childhood.
The Pauline Bourne-Duryea papers are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
