Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Military Board of Kentucky was created at the outbreak of the Civil War by the Unionist dominated General Assembly. The Board, presided over by Governor Beriah Magoffin (1815-1885), was to oversee Kentucky's armed forces protect Kentucky's neutrality during the conflict. The Board stripped the Confederate leaning Kentucky State Guard of its funds and supplies, giving them to Unionist Home Guard units. Magoffin was eventually demoted to a member of the board and later removed all together.
