Collection Overview

Biography / History
Walter S. Tevis was an American novelist and short story writer. He was born in San Francisco on February 28, 1928. When he was eleven years old his family relocated to Madison County, Kentucky, where they had received a land grant. He served for the Navy in the Pacific Theatre during the Second World War. After returning to the United States in 1945, he studied English Literature at the University of Kentucky earning a Bachelor's and a Master's. He worked at a Lexington pool hall while studying at the University of Kentucky. After college, he became a teacher at rural Kentucky high schools. Later he taught literature at Northern Kentucky University and at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. In 1978 he moved to New York City to become a full time writer. He wrote short stories for many magazines including Redbook, Saturday Evening Post and Playboy. His novels The Hustler, The Color of Money, and The Man Who Fell to Earth were adapted into film. Tevis's work at a Lexington pool hall influenced his novel, The Hustler. Tevis died in New York City in 1984.
