Biography / History
Members of the Shelby family of Fayette County, Ky. were descendants of Isaac Shelby, first governor of Kentucky. They were involved in the military, in business and farming operations, politics and social life. Major Thomas H. Shelby, son of Governor Shelby, was the first man in central Kentucky to ship beef to England. His sons, Isaac P. Shelby (1822-1896) and Thomas H. Shelby, Jr. and other family members continued the family farming enterprises.
Scope and Content
These are the papers of the Shelby family of Fayette County, Ky. Correspondence, documents and memorabilia reflect their personal and professional lives. Included in the collection are a certificate of membership for Isaac P. Shelby in the American Colonization Society signed by Henry Clay (1846), family photographs (removed to the Photo Archives), correspondence by Benjamin L. Shaw, business associate of Isaac P. Shelby and judge William B. Kinkead, husband of Elizabeth Shelby. There are tax receipts and personal mementos belonging to various family members. Among the topics of interest in the many letters are passing references to the war with Mexico, annexation of Texas, land speculation, yellow fever, "the Galt House Tragedy," business, politics and politicians, banking and elections.
