Collection Overview

Biography / History
Author, journalist. John Fox, Jr. was born at Stony Point, Ky. His father was a schoolteacher who taught John at home until he was fifteen. John attended Transylvania and Harvard, then embarked on a brief journalistic career. He returned to Kentucky in 1885 due to poor health, and participated in some mining ventures with his father and brother. This exposure to life in the mountains greatly influenced Fox's writing career. He is best known for two novels, THE LITTLE SHEPHERD OF KINGDOM COME and THE TRAIL OF THE LONESOME PINE. Fox served as a foreign correspondent during the Spanish-American and Russo- Japanese wars. He died in 1919.
Scope and Content
This is a collection of some of the personal letters of John Fox. All but four of these letters were written to George H. Yenowine, of Lexington, Ky. These letters discuss Fox's experiences on the lecture circuit and the sales of his books. The other four letters are also of a personal nature.
