Scope and Content
The Jakie L. Pruett letters (dated 1974-1985, undated; 0.16 cubic feet; 6 folders) comprise letters that document the research conducted by Pruett on former President Lyndon Baines Johnson in the 1970s. Pruett contacted past senators, representatives, Johnson administration officials, teachers, classmates, journalists, and friends who all knew and interacted with LBJ over the course of his life. The letters include anecdotes on interactions between LBJ and themselves or another person, their views on his handling of civil rights, the Vietnam War, and the War on Poverty; and his general demeanor towards his staff and the rest of the world. Many letters came from people who identified themselves as members of the Democratic Party, however some came from Republicans as well. Many letters do focus on Johnson's politics, but some describe Johnson prior to entering politics and working as a teacher. There are also letters in the collections between Wade Hall and Monetary Investments, LTD who sold the Pruett letters to Hall after Pruett's death.
The Jakie L. Pruett letters are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
