Collection Overview

Biography / History
A native of Benton, Kentucky, Joe Creason (1918-1974) became one of the most well-known newspaper writers in Kentucky during the twentieth century. He began his career as a journalist as a reporter for the Kentucky Kernel, the student newspaper at the University of Kentucky, from which he graduated in 1940. He became the editor of the Benton Tribune-Democrat that year, and then worked at the Ledger & Times in Murray, Kentucky before being hired as a sports reporter for Louisville Courier-Journal in 1941. After serving two years in the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II, he returned to the Courier-Journal and became a staff and feature writer for the newspaper. In 1960 he edited a newspaper supplement titled "The Civil War in Kentucky," which became the first newspaper supplement to win the National Civil War Centennial Award of Distinction. In 1963 he began writing a daily column titled "Joe Creason's Kentucky." He became a nationally recognized authority on the people of eastern Kentucky, their customs, folklore and speech patterns. In 1967 he shared a Pulitzer Prize with the newspaper which was awarded for public service. In 1972 he published a collection of his columns in book form under the title Joe Creason's Kentucky, and in 1975 published Crossroads and Coffee Trees. He died unexpectedly of a heart attack in 1974.
