Collection Overview

Scope and Content
During much of this period the principal academic administrator of Transylvania University was the College Dean. Later this function was assumed by the Vice President and Dean of the College. Materials consist of self-study reports, correspondence, memoranda, and newsclippings from the office of Transylvania University's chief academic officer. Documentation present includes fragmentary records from the terms of Deans Thomas B. Macartney, Leland A. Brown, Irvin E. Lunger, John R. Bryden, Walter G. Enge, and Asa A. Humphries. Much of the documentation is from the term of Leland A. Brown (1941-1965), who also served as acting president of Transylvania from 1943 to 1945. A brief series of his correspondence from that period, including letters from President Raymond F. McLain is included. University self-studies date back to 1919 and run through 1993. Records of the Office of Institutional Research, which was a subdivision of the dean's office from 1946 to 1969, include documentation of various research grants including correspondence with the General Education Board and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Unpublished catalog of holdings. Condition of material: fair (acid damage). Variant title: Transylvania University. Administration. Academic Dean.
