Collection Overview

Biography / History
Mabel Jones (1890-1970) was born Mabel Hazel Sells to Clayte Sells (1862-1922) and Cora Dinkle (1869-1957) in Anderson, Indiana. Mabel's father was a prominent undertaker in the town, having the oldest firm in Anderson. In 1910, Mabel married Dr. Aubrey V. Jones (1881-1937), of Tennessee. When the couple married, they relocated to Louisville, Kentucky. The couple had no children.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Mabel Jones letters collection (dated 1914-1936, undated; 0.17 cubic feet; 9 folders) comprises letters, receipts, and two photographs that primarily document the relationship between Mabel and her husband and mother in Indiana and Kentucky in the early twentieth century. The letters to Mabel from her husband, Aubrey Jones, discuss the patients he takes care of, the different cities he travels to, being in the Army, missing her, trying to fix Mabel's ailments from a distance, and his personal health. The letters from Mabel's mother discuss finances, family spats, and personal health. Other letters in the collection thank Mabel for her assistance, inform her of loan requirements, and bills due. The receipts in the collection include paid membership dues and insurance payments. The photographs include a portrait of Aubrey Jones and another of unidentified persons.
The Mabel Jones letters are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
