Collection Overview

Scope and Content
Two sound tape collections include the College's Sound Archives and the Reuben Powell Collection. The Sound Archives includes cassette and reel-to-reel recordings of traditional music performances at the College, as well as speeches, oral history interviews, and folk tales relating to southern Appalachian culture. Powell, a traditional music collector, made tapes for the Renfro Valley Tape Club, an organization which distributed recordings of folk and country and western performances to its members. Many of these recordings were copied from commercial disks, but off-the-air recordings from radio programs and Powell's interviews of performers are also included.
