Collection Overview

Biography / History
John R. Jack Guthrie (b. 1941), public relations executive, journalist, member of the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees. Currently chairman and chief executive officer of Guthrie/Mayes Public Relations (launched by Guthrie in 1977), an independently-owned public relations firm in Kentucky. Also a founding partner (1987) of The WORLDCOM Public Relations Group, a world-wide network of independent public relations firms.
Guthrie attended the University of Kentucky, serving as editor for the university newspaper the Kentucky Kernel, 1962-1963. He is a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. After graduation from the University of Kentucky in 1963 with a Bachelor's degree in journalism, Guthrie began his public relations career with Philip Morris, Inc., in New York in 1964. In 1971, he returned to Louisville as Executive Vice President of the Kentucky Derby Festival.
In 2002, Guthrie completed a six-year term on the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees. In 1988, he was President of the UK National Alumni Association and in 2002 served as immediate past president of UK's School of Journalism Alumni Association. Other community and professional service includes president of the Louisville Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists; past board member of Greater Louisville, Inc.; member of the Louisville Rotary Club; and member of the Public Relations Society of America (since 1966) and active in that organization's Counselors Academy.
Guthrie has received several awards including Sigma Chi Franternity's Significant Sig (1996); Man of the Year (1995), Louisville Ad Federation; distinguished Catholic School Alumni Award (1995), Archdiocese of Louisville; induction into Trinity High School (Louisville, Ky.) Hall of Fame (1995); induction into the Communicator's Hall of Fame by the Public Relations Society of America (1993); Kentucky's Outstanding Public Relations Executive (1978), Western Kentucky University; Outstanding Alumnus of the Year (1981), Trinity High School.
