Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Modern Dance/Kentucky (MD/K) was a non-profit, modern dance collective active in Lexington, Ky., from at least 1979 to 1985. David C. Johnson was the troupe's treasurer (1981-1983) and board president (1983-1985) during this time period. MD/K comprised a school and, starting in 1982, a performance troupe, Strong Wind Wild Horses, directed by Shirley Jenkins and Erik Whitmyre. MD/K was funded by the Kentucky Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Kentucky Humanities Council, and the Lexington Opera House Fund.
- Scope and Content
- The Modern Dance/Kentucky records (dated 1971-1985; 10.25 cubic feet; 4 document boxes, 1 flat box) comprise correspondence, financial material, office files and reports, and publicity (photographs, posters, event programs, postcards, and newspaper clippings) documenting the activities of this Lexington, Ky.-based modern dance school and their performance troupe, Strong Wind Wild Horses. The majority of the letters were sent to or from David C. Johnson in his role as treasurer and then board president (1981-1985). Some of the school/troupe's productions included, Dance Away the Gray (1983); Cabaret (1984); and 90 Minutes of Non-Stop Magic, and are documented in the publicity materials, which include handmade originals of posters and the troupe's logo. The financial material includes income and expenses (including members' costs associated with teaching dance classes), funding and donor information, and tax exemptions.
