Biography / History
The survey included a sample of approximately 240 churches located in eighteen rural counties and six metropolitan areas in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Utilizing survey schedules developed by staff, as well as standardized tests such as the Dynes sect-church attitude scale, the survey gathered data on religious values, attitudes, and beliefs within the region.
Scope and Content
These Southern Appalachian Studies religious surveys were administered by Earl D. C. Brewer as Director of Religious Research.
Materials include survey field workers notebooks; survey schedules (8.8 l.f.); reel-to-reel tapes and transcriptions of interviews with ministers, lay leaders, church groups, and of sermons or church addresses (7.6 l.f.); church identification sheets; general church schedules; and other items.
Also present are drafts of chapters of the book LIFE AND RELIGION IN SOUTHERN APPALACHIA written by Willis D. Weatherford, Sr. and Earl D. C. Brewer; Brewer's correspondence with various religious leaders; copies of religious lectures by Weatherford and others; and correspondence of survey supervisors and Southern Appalachian ministers, relating to a conference at Lake Junaluska, North Carolina (1962).
